Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
