Each time a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
