A defence official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to avoid talking about secret information in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
In a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister explained that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have conversations at a classified level in any kind of car, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
The broader security environment underscores the importance of strong measures and vigilance in all areas of government operations, including vehicle use to discussions practices.
