The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
