Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

They also asked that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.
